On October 24th and 25th, AUTH had an excellent opportunity to participate in the 25M GA meeting of the Sustan-a-print (SaP) project, hosted at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain. Being the leader of the Work Package 2 (WP2), AUTH successfully presented the results on the development of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) foils, poly(lactic acid)-b-poly(ethylene azelate) (PLA-b-PEAz) flexible biobased blocky copolyesters and the up-scaling of nanomaterials and PLA-based foils. During the project, AUTH developed compostable and recyclable PLA and PLA-based foils to substitute the fossil-based substrates used in printed electronics (PE). For instance, poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) is currently used in PE. AUTH also presented the latest results of work package 5, on the recycling substrate materials and specifically new routes for the complete depolymerization of the PLA and PLA-based copolyesters under alkaline hydrolysis assisted with microwave irradiation.
Sustain a Print (SaP) aims to replace the fossil-based materials used for printed electronics with biobased, biodegradable and recycled materials by the implementation of eco-friendly and Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) methodologies (https://www.sustainaprint.eu).
