Two weeks ago, the members of BikiarisLab had the pleasure to showcase their work via both oral and poster presentations at two noteworthy conferences: the 1st Aristotle conference on Chemistry (ACC2023) and the 6th Chemistry conference of undergraduate and postgraduate students of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The two conferences were held at the Aristotle University’s Research Dissemination Center, during November, the former at 11-12 and the later at 12-15 of November.
Throughout the conferences, the members of Pr. Bikiaris research group exchanged knowledge and ideas with fellow presenters and scientists from Greece and all over the world. All participants delivered inspiring presentations and we are looking forward to the next meetings.
During the 1st ACC2023 we had the privilege of hosting the lecture of Mercouri G. Kanatzidis, one of the most distinguished and influential Greek chemists, entitled ''New Materials for Energy Conversion of Heat and Sunlight to Electricity'', addressing environmental issues. Prof. Dimitrios N. Bikiaris presented the latest scientific activities and accomplishments of the Laboratory of Polymer and Colors Chemistry and Technology of AUTH.
Check out the inspiring presentations of our lab!
Oral presentations
6th Chemistry conference of undergraduate and postgraduate students of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki:
Nikolaos Pardalis
"Exploitation of olive oil industrial wastes as additives in polyethylene-based composites". This work is a part of the nationally funded project (OLHE) (Olhe.eu | Home), which aims in the production of innovative and sustainable wood boards from low-value waste biomass, employing novel adhesives, prepared from raw materials of plant origin.
Rafail Ioannidis
''Investigation of biodegradability and recycling ability of novel poly(lactic acid)-co-poly(ethylene azelate) copolyesters''. This work was funded by the European Union's HORIZON 2020 project Sustain a Print (SaP) (Home - Sustainaprint.eu) which aims to replace the fossil-based materials used for printed electronics (PE) with biobased, biodegradable and recycled materials by the implementation of eco-friendly and Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) methodologies.
Despoina Meimaroglou
''Synthesis of multifunctional innovative immediate response hemostasic pads with the usage of modified chitosan and nanoparticles with enhanced antibacterial properties''. Τhe authors wish to acknowledge co-funding of this research by European Union-European Regional Development Fund and Greek Ministry of Education, Research and Religions/EYDE-ETAK through program EPANEK 2014- 2020/Action “EREVNO-DIMIOURGO-KAINOTOMO” (project Τ2ΕΔΚ-00275).
Oral presentations
1st Aristotle conference on Chemistry (ACC2023):
Evangelia Balla
''Synthesis and characterisation of novel poly(butylene succincte)/cutin polyesters”. The research work was supported by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (HFRI) under the 4th Call for HFRI PhD Fellowships (Fellowship Number 10620).

Nikos Bikiaris
Nikos presented a part of his PhD thesis entitled: ''Synthesis of PLA-PEG-PLA triblock copolymer microparticles using microfluidics technique as potential drug delivery systems''.
Christina Samiotaki
''Preparation and Characterization of HDPE / Lignin Composites''. This work is a part of the Redondo project (funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe Framework Programme under Grant Agreement No 101058449) (REDONDO Project | Reversibly Designed Cross-linked Polymers (redondo-project.eu)). REDONDO targets the synthesis of reversibly cross-linked polyethylene and the preparation of composite materials with advanced properties owing to the incorporation of biobased additives.
Poster presentation
Johan Stanley
''Synthesis of poly(ethylene 2,5-furan dicarboxylate) based nanocomposites by in-situ polymerization technique for food packaging applications''. He aims on producing bio-based poly(ethylene furanoate) (PEF) with high molecular weight using 2,5-furan dicarboxylic acid (FDCA) or its derivative dimethyl 2,5-furan dicarboxylate (DMFD) as food packaging material and to study the addition of nano-additives with antimicrobial properties by in situ polymerization. His research is funded under the 'Advanced Research and Training Network in Food Quality, safety and Security' project —FoodTraNet — H2020-MSCA-ITN-2020 (FoodTraNet: Home).
